Softball tournament 1980 – 2022

Rooted in humble beginnings as a means to raise funds for baseball uniforms, the softball tournament blossomed into a cherished annual community event that spanned an impressive 42 years. In 1982, it was renamed the Rich Kenney Memorial Tournament, honoring the life of Rich Kenney, a beloved neighborhood coach, father, and friend who tragically passed away at the young age of 42, leaving an indelible mark on those he touched.

What began as an all-male event evolved into a coed celebration of sportsmanship, attracting up to 20 teams of varying skill levels each year. Among the renowned squads that graced the field were the ever-present Dolphins, who never missed a tournament in 42 years, as well as the formidable Martha’s Vineyard, Lakers, Brewers, Clydesdales, Minutemen, and the comically named We Just Stink, along with countless others who contributed to the rich tapestry of this tradition.

The softball tournament stood as a testament to the power of community, bringing people together in friendly competition, fostering camaraderie, and honoring the memory of a cherished individual whose legacy continues to inspire.
